MESA, Ariz., March 12 (UPI) -- The Chicago Cubs Wednesday released infielder Kevin Orie, their Opening Day third baseman in 1997 and '98.
Orie, 30, rejoined the Cubs, his initial club, in November 2001 after signing a minor league deal. He batted .281 in 13 late-season games for the Cubs in 2002 after his contract was purchased from Triple-A Iowa of the Pacific Coast League.
Orie was selected by the Cubs in the 1993 draft, and made his major league debut in 1997. In 316 big league games with the Cubs and Florida, he has batted .249 with 22 homers and 116 RBI.
The Cubs gave Orie his unconditional release, part of a series of moves Wednesday. They also optioned infielder Nate Frese, outfielders Nic Jackson and Jackson Melian, and pitcher Matt Bruback to Iowa.
