San Francisco (ss) 8, Kansas City 7

SURPRISE, Ariz., March 9 (UPI) -- Andres Galarraga, trying to earn a spot on the roster, hit a two-run homer Sunday as a split squad of San Francisco Giants edged the Kansas City Royals, 8-7.

Galarraga's homer off Chris George made it 5-1 in the top of the third inning before the Giants added a pair in the fourth to open a 7-1 lead.

Carlos Beltran, who drove in five runs, delivered a grand slam off Jeff Urban in the fifth to bring the Royals within 7-6. Mike Sweeney and Ken Harvey contributed solo homers for Kansas City.

Giants starter Jason Schmidt earned the win, allowing two runs and just one hit over four innings with three walks and three strikeouts.

George took the loss, surrendering five runs in three frames.

Neifi Perez went three for five for the Giants while Pedro Feliz and Galarraga had two hits apiece.
