MILWAUKEE, March 8 (UPI) -- Gary Payton scored 28 points Saturday night, including a three-pointer with three seconds left in regulation, as the Milwaukee Bucks rallied for a wild 138-133, overtime victory over the Golden State Warriors.
"It was a great win, great character on our team to stay with it and make the plays, and to win it in overtime, it's a big win for us," said Milwaukee Coach George Karl. "It's kind of fun. I always felt we had a chance to win it. I thought we would do it with a little more defense instead of making threes."
A basket by Antawn Jamison gave the Warriors a 102-85 lead with 10:18 left in the fourth quarter, but the Bucks outscored them, 34-17, down the stretch and forged a 119-119 tie with 54 seconds to go on a layup by Michael Redd.
"They made a lot of threes during that stretch," said Golden State Coach Eric Musselman. "They have a lot of guys who can do that, and they did. It is hard to beat 41 points (in the fourth quarter) on the road, but you look at their team and they have a lot of veterans who make big shots."
Earl Boykins hit a jumper with 39 seconds to go to put Golden State ahead and Jamison made the first of two free throws to give the Warriors a three-point advantage.
After Payton's three-pointer tied it, Troy Murphy inbounded to Boykins, but the 5-5 guard fell into the backcourt, giving the ball back to Milwaukee. The Bucks could not get off a good shot and the game went to overtime.
Tim Thomas gave Milwaukee the lead for good with a dunk 59 seconds into the extra period and a layup by Toni Kukoc gave the Bucks a 127-123 advantage with 3:28 left.
Jamison made a pair of free throws with 22 seconds remaining to get Golden State within 131-130, but Thomas' layup made it 136-131 with six seconds to go.
Sam Cassell scored seven of his 28 points in overtime and dished out 13 assists for the Bucks, who extended their winning streak against the Warriors to seven games.
"Guys made tough shots and we stepped up to play at the end," Redd said. "We did play some good defense, and the thing was, they were hot."
Jamison totaled 40 points and Gilbert Arenas had 30, but the Warriors have lost two in a row following a six-game winning streak.
Murphy pulled down a career-high 22 rebounds to go with 12 points for the Warriors, who shot 53 percent but surrendered 21 points off 21 turnovers.
In beating the Warriors a seventh straight time, Milwaukee moved into a seventh-place tie with Orlando in the Eastern Conference. The Bucks have not lost to Golden State since Feb. 12, 2000, and have won 14 of the last 17 meetings between the two.
