Edmonton 2; Los Angeles 1

LOS ANGELES, March 7 (UPI) -- Anson Carter scored with 5:59 remaining Thursday night to lead Edmonton to a key 2-1 win over Los Angeles.

The Oilers ran their unbeaten streak to three games, and extended their lead in the battle for the final Western Conference playoff berth.

Edmonton had not held consecutive opponents under two goals since Dec. 8-11, but they carried the momentum from Tuesday's 2-1 triumph over San Jose and moved five points ahead of ninth-place Nashville in the West.

Carter fired a slap shot from the top of the right faceoff circle that was stopped by goaltender Jamie Storr. Shawn Horcoff pushed the rebound to Mike Comrie, who fanned on his shot, but Carter lifted the puck over the sprawled Storr for his 25th goal of the season and first game-winner.

The Kings nearly tied it with 69 seconds to play.

Craig Johnson's deflection was stopped by goalie Tommy Salo, but Johnson shoved in the rebound before he was cross-checked from behind by defenseman Steve Staios. Referee Kelly Sutherland signaled goal, but was overruled by the video replay official, who ruled the puck never crossed the goal line.

Los Angeles pulled Storr for an extra attacker, but could not get the equalizer and fell eight points behind Edmonton.
