St. Louis 7, NY Mets 1

JUPITER, Fla., March 3 (UPI) -- Jason Simontacchi and Dustin Hermanson combined with five other pitchers on a four-hitter Monday as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York Mets, 7-1, in a Grapefruit League contest.

Simontacchi started and tossed two hitless innings, followed by Hermanson, who surrendered just one hit over two scoreless frames.

Jeff Fassero, Lance Painter, Al Levine and Russ Springer kept the Mets scoreless while each putting in an inning of work. New York scored its lone run off Joey Hamilton in the eighth inning.

Tino Martinez drove in two runs and Ivanon Coffie had two doubles for the Cardinals, which was without second baseman Fernando Vina for the third straight game due to a concussion.

Starter Pedro Astacio pitched three scoreless innings for the Mets, striking out two and yielding one hit.

Heath Bell gave up four runs and five hits over 1 1/3 innings and David Weathers surrendered one run and two hits in one inning.
