NY Mets 7, St. Louis 3

JUPITER, Fla., Feb. 28 (UPI) -- Jay Bell had three hits Friday, including a two-run single, to lead the New York Mets to a 7-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.

The 37-year-old Bell signed a minor league contract with the Mets on Feb. 11 and is competing with Ty Wigginton for playing time at third base. His two-run single in the fourth inning gave the Mets a 5-1 lead.

Mo Vaughn, trying to rebound from a disappointing 2002 season, hit a two-run homer in the first for the Mets.

Al Leiter allowed one hit in two scoreless innings for the win. Albert Pujols belted a solo homer and So Taguchi had two hits for the Cardinals.

Cardinals starter Brett Tomko gave up two runs and three hits in two innings.
