Syracuse 88, Georgetown 80

SYRACUSE, N.Y., Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Freshmen Carmelo Anthony and Gerry McNamara each 22 points Monday night as the 21st-ranked Syracuse Orangemen posted an 88-80 Big East Conference victory over Georgetown.

Syracuse entered the latest coaches college basketball poll Monday as a result of its 67-65 win over Pittsburgh on Saturday, a victory during which fans at the Carrier Dome stormed the court three times to celebrate the triumph.

Monday, fans watched the duo combine to make 6-of-13 3-point attempts. Anthony hit a series of jumpers, including one with just over four minutes remaining that gave Syracuse (15-3, 6-2 Big East West) its largest lead, 76-63.

McNamara, a 93 percent foul shooter, made all eight attempts from the line and finished 5-of-10 from the floor.

Georgetown (10-8, 2-6), which was coming off Saturday's double-overtime loss to Notre Dame, got 32 points and 13 rebounds from Mike Sweetney.
