CALGARY, Alberta, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- The Calgary Flames sent left wing Jamie Wright to the Philadelphia Flyers for future considerations Wednesday while acquiring defenseman Mike Mottau from the New York Rangers for a future sixth-round draft pick.
Signed as a free agent in August 2001, Wright appeared in 19 games with the Flames this season, collecting two goals and two assists with 12 penalty minutes. Selected by Dallas in the fourth round of the 1994 draft, the 26-year-old Wright has 12 goals and 20 assists in 120 career games.
"All three of our coaches have had Jamie at different times during his career," Philadelphia General Manager Bob Clarke said. "They felt that Jamie would be a good utility player, along the lines of Joe Sacco. He can play either wing, is a good worker and is an intelligent player. The coaches liked what Jamie could bring to our club."
A seventh-round pick in the 1997 draft, Mottau appeared in 19 games with the Rangers, recording three assists and 13 penalty minutes. The 24-year-old defenseman, who captured the Hobey Baker award in 2000 while at Boston College, had a goal and 16 assists in 29 games with New York's AHL affiliate in Hartford.
Mottau joins a Calgary team that is mired in the Northwest Division basement with a 16-22-7-3 record for 42 points. The Flames have won two games in a row after enduring a five-game winless streak, and are 6-4-2 under coach Darryl Sutter, who was hired on Dec. 28.
