Golding within one shot of Hugo

CAPETOWN, South Africa, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Phil Golding of England shot an 8-under-par 64 Saturday to move within one shot of South Africa's Jean Hugo after three rounds of the South African Airways Open.

Golding, who made a record 16th visit to the European Tour qualifying school last November and emerged with a card for the sixth time, equaled a course record at Erinvale Golf Club set earlier in the day by South Africa's Tjaart van der Walt and Ian Hutchings.

A victory here would help Golding avoid another late-season trip to Q-school, and he helped his cause with a round that included eagles on holes No. 3 and 18, five birdies and a bogey on No. 17.

"It would be good to bank a decent check early (in the season)," Golding said. "If you can get off to a good start, it takes a bit of pressure off."

Golding salvaged a bogey on the 17th hole after his drive went out of bounds and on the par-4 No. 18, he holed his 9-iron from 146 yards for an eagle.

Hugo, the first-round leader from nearby Stellenbosch, bounced back from a 73 on Friday with a 65 on Saturday for a three-round score of 12-under 204.

Golding shares second place with defending champion Tom Clark of South Africa, who settled for a 71 on Saturday. Clark is trying to become the first golfer to defend his South African Airways Open title since Gary Player in 1977.

Five golfers are five strokes back at 207 - Justin Rose and Brian Davis of England, Hutchings and Trevor Immelman of South Africa and Rolf Muntz of Holland.

Despite his round of 64, van der Walt is five shots off the pace.
