ARLINGTON, Va., Jan. 4 (UPI) -- Ohio State was the unanimous No. 1 in the first of two college football polls released early Saturday morning, collecting all 61 first-place votes in the Top-25 coaches poll.
The Buckeyes (14-0) defeated Miami (12-1) in the Fiesta Bowl on Friday night, 31-24, in double-overtime to capture their first national championship since 1968 and the fifth in team history.
Ohio State was second to the Hurricanes in the poll before the game but earned each of the 61 first-place votes and 1,525 points from the panel of coaches.
Miami dropped to second after failing to defend its national title. The Hurricanes had won 34 straight games before an injury to star running back Willis McGahee and a controversial pass interference call cost them.
With 1,451 points, Miami finished 73 ahead of Georgia (13-1), which moved to third from fourth following its 26-13 win over Florida State in the Sugar Bowl.
Southern California (11-2) went from fifth to fourth, collecting 1,362 points after its 38-17 win over Iowa (11-2) in the Orange Bowl.
Oklahoma (12-2) rounded out the top five, jumping three spots by beating Washington State (10-3), 34-14, in the Rose Bowl.
Kansas State (11-2) was sixth, followed by Texas (11-2), Iowa, Michigan (10-3) and Washington State. The Wildcats, Longhorns and Wolverines all won bowl games.
North Carolina State (11-3) leaped six spots to 11th and was followed by Boise State (12-1), Maryland (11-3), Virginia Tech (10-4), Penn State (9-4), Auburn (9-4), Notre Dame (10-3), Pittsburgh (9-4), Marshall (11-2) and West Virginia (9-4).
West Virginia suffered the biggest fall, slipping seven spots to 20th after its 48-22 loss to Virginia (9-5) in the Continental Tire Bowl.
Colorado (9-5) came in 21st, preceding Texas Christian (10-2), Florida State, Florida (8-5) and Virginia.
