North Carolina (7-2, 1-0 ACC) was tied at halftime with Florida State (6-2, 0-1), which was concluding an eight-game homestand, before McCants made a three-pointer to put the Tar Heels ahead for good, 33-30.
North Carolina scored the first seven points and 30 of the first 40 in the second half and pulled away for their second straight victory following back-to-back defeats.
Anthony Richardson scored 14 points and Tim Pickett 13 for the Seminoles, who had won three in a row.
Florida State last won a conference opener against Wake Forest on Jan. 4, 2000 -- the same day the school's football team defeated Virginia Tech for the national championship.
