SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- The San Francisco Giants signed infielder Neifi Perez to a two-year contract Sunday, two days after refusing to offer him arbitration.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
The Giants claimed Perez off waivers from the Kansas City Royals on Nov. 20. He won a Gold Glove at shortstop with the Colorado Rockies in 2000 but figures to move into the lineup at second base following the departure of free agent Jeff Kent.
"Neifi is an accomplished major league middle infielder who can hit for average, run well and play on either side of second base," Giants General Manager Brian Sabean said. "Neifi has the advantage of being a switch-hitter and can steal a base when called upon. He adds depth to our infield on any given day."
Perez, 27, batted just .236 last season with three homers and 37 RBI in 145 games with the Royals. He has a .977 career fielding percentage, including a .987 mark in 54 games at second base.
