Whire Sox re-sign Sandy Alomar

CHICAGO, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- The Chicago White Sox Friday brought back catcher Sandy Alomar Jr. at a cheaper rate.

Alomar, 36, a free agent, signed a one-year contract. Financial terms were not disclosed by the team, but ESPN Radio 1000 in Chicago reported that Alomar will earn $700,000 after making $2.5 million this past season.

Alomar split last season between the White Sox and Colorado Rockies. He batted .287 with seven homers and 25 RBI in 51 games for the White Sox before being traded on July 29 for pitcher Enemencio Pacheco.

In 38 games with the Rockies, Alomar hit .267 with no homers and 12 RBI.

"Sandy is the perfect guy to come in and mentor our young catchers Miguel Olivo and Josh Paul," said White Sox General Manager Ken Williams. "We know what type of player he is and what his presence means to a clubhouse, and he knows our pitching staff and the American League."

Alomar, a former Gold Glove winner, has been plagued by injuries in recent years. He is a career .275 hitter with 104 homers and 517 RBI over 15 seasons, and ranks sixth among active catchers with 1,113 games caught.
