Miami unanimous No. 1

ARLINGTON, Va., Dec. 8 (UPI) -- Miami, which wrapped up a spot in the Fiesta Bowl with a 56-45 victory over Virginia Tech, was the unanimous No. 1 pick in the final regular season college football coaches poll released Sunday morning.

The Hurricanes collected all 61 first-place votes and 1,525 points in a nationwide poll of Division I-A coaches. Last week, Miami received all but one first-place vote.

Miami (12-0) stretched its winning to 34 games, setting up a showdown with No. 2 Ohio State (13-0) for the national championship. The Buckeyes concluded their regular season on Nov. 23 with a 14-9 win over Michigan.

The final poll will be released after the national championship on Jan. 3.

The top five remained unchanged with Ohio State second, followed by Iowa (11-1), Georgia (12-1) and Southern California (10-2). Georgia won the Southeastern Conference championship Saturday with a 30-3 victory over Arkansas.

Completing the top 10 were Kansas State (10-2), Washington State (10-2), Oklahoma (11-2), Texas (10-2) and Penn State (9-3). Washington State captured the Pac-10 Conference championship and a trip to the Rose Bowl with a 48-27 victory over UCLA.

Oklahoma won the Big 12 Conference title game with a 29-7 victory over Colorado.

Michigan (9-3) is 11th, and is followed by Notre Dame (10-2), West Virginia (9-3), Colorado (9-4), Boise State (11-1), Florida State (9-4), North Carolina State (10-3), Maryland (10-3), Virginia Tech (9-4) and Florida (8-4).

Marshall (10-2), which was ranked in the preseason, moved back into the poll at No. 24 after defeating Toledo, 49-45, in the Mid-American Conference championship game.

Completing the poll are No. 21 Colorado State (10-3), No. 22 Auburn (8-4), No. 23 Pittsburgh (8-4) and No. 25 Louisiana State (8-4).
