Senators send rookie Spezza to minors

OTTAWA, Dec. 2 (UPI) -- The Ottawa Senators, on a 10-game unbeaten streak, sent rookie center Jason Spezza to the minor leagues Monday.

Spezza has been somewhat of a weak link on one of the hottest teams in the NHL, tying Jody Hull with a club-low minus-7 ratio. He has four goals and six assists in 17 games with the Senators.

Ottawa sent the second overall pick in the 2001 draft to Binghamton of the American Hockey League, where he had three goals and three assists in four games before his recall Oct. 23.

Spezza, a highly touted 19-year-old from Mississauga, Ontario, was a key part of the trade that sent star center Alexei Yashin to the New York Islanders prior to the 2001-02 season. Ottawa also acquired defenseman Zdeno Chara.

The Senators are 8

2 in their last 10 game and entered Monday night second overall in the Eastern Conference at 13-6-3.
