Schoenfelder wins World Cup slalom

PARK CITY, Utah, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- Austria's Rainer Schoenfelder held on to claim a victory Sunday in the first men's World Cup slalom of the season, denying the Kostelic family a weekend sweep.

Schoenfelder twisted his way down a deteriorating C.B.'s run in a two-run combined time of 1 minute, 46.56 seconds to register his third career win.

Frenchman Pierrick Bourgeat crossed second just one-tenth of a second back of the winner.

Austrians dominated by taking three of the top four places as Benjamin Raich was third in 1:46.89, followed by Manfred Pranger in 1:47.38.

Olympic champion Jean-Pierre Vidal of France was sixth and Chip Knight recorded the top American result by crossing seventh.

World Cup slalom champion Ivica Kostelic of Croatia had sat second after the opening run and appeared poised to open defense of his title with a podium finish, but stumbled on his second trip and faded to 14th.

Kostelic's sister, Olympic champion Janica, was a winner of the women's slalom Saturday.

American Bode Miller, the Olympic silver medalist, and Britain's Alain Baxter, who was stripped of his bronze medal after testing positive for a banned drug, did not qualify for the second run.
