Miami remains No. 1, in coaches poll

ARLINGTON, Va., Nov. 24 (UPI) -- Miami remained in the top spot, but Washington State dropped six places after a tough loss when the latest college football coaches poll was released Sunday morning.

Miami (10-0) collected a total of 1,524 points in the nationwide poll, but lost one of the 61 first-place votes after just barely stretching its winning streak to 32 games with a 28-21 victory over Pittsburgh on Thursday. The Panthers had a chance to tie the game, but Rod Rutherford's fourth-down pass barely eluded a diving Yogi Roth in the end zone in the closing seconds.

Ohio State picked up that remaining first-place nod and 1,462 points. The Buckeyes improved to 13-0 for the first time in school history with a 14-9 triumph over Michigan on Saturday, earning them a chance to play for their first national title in 34 years with a trip to the Fiesta Bowl.

Washington State (9-2), which saw its hopes for a national crown end with a 29-26 defeat to Washington on Saturday, slipped from No. 3 to the ninth spot.

With the Cougars' fall, Iowa (11-1), Oklahoma (10-1), Georgia (10-1), Southern California (9-2) and Notre Dame (10-1) each moved up a spot. Iowa is third, but is the one in the group to have only a bowl game remaining.
