Austin Peay dismisses football coach

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn., Nov. 18 (UPI) -- Bill Schmitz, who posted a 19-46 record in six seasons, will not return as the football coach at Austin Peay.

The school announced Monday it will not renew the contract of Schmitz, who led Austin Peay to a 7-5 record this year, its first winning season since 1984.

"There were significant philosophical differences between Bill and myself on the direction of this football program," athletic director Dave Loos said.

Schmitz was hired Feb. 18, 1997, when the school elected to drop scholarships. He came to Austin Peay after posting a four-year record of 20-19 at the Coast Guard Academy, his alma mater.
