NY Giants 19, Washington 17

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Matt Bryant kicked four field goals in the rain Sunday to give the New York Giants a pivotal 19-17 triumph over the division rival Washington Redskins.

Bryant had been perfect in 11 field goal tries prior to last week's contest in Minnesota, but without holder Matt Allen, he was able to make just one of four attempts in that contest and missed an extra point.

Tom Rouen, who took over for Allen as the team's punter and inherited the holding chores, struggled mightily and Giants Coach Jim Fassel went back to Allen for this key NFC East Division contest.

On a soggy field and in steady rain, Bryant converted field goals of 43, 34, 33 and 19 yards, the final kick coming 3:04 into the final quarter.

New York quarterback Kerry Collins completed 22 of 46 passes for 211 yards.

Washington (4-6) managed just 166 yards of offense, but still had a chance to take the lead late in the game. Kicker James Tuthill lined up for a 43-yard field goal with 3:30 to go, but slipped striding into the ball and drilled it into the line.

New York (6-4) has won three straight games -- all since Fassel took over the play calling -- and remained one game behind the division-leading Philadelphia Eagles.
