Kazuo Matsui's second home run of the game pulled Japan within, 7-5, in the fourth inning. But the MLB All-Stars answered with two runs in the fifth on a run-scoring single by Seattle

Mariners right fielder and former Japan League star Ichiro Suzuki and an RBI fielder's choice by Williams.

Arizona's Miguel Batista had a shaky start, but picked up the win after allowing four runs and three hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings. Los Angeles Dodgers closer Eric Gagne allowed one hit and struck out three in two scoreless innings for his second save this week.

Gagne, who finished second in the National League with 52 saves, entered the game with two runners on base in the eighth inning and retired Japan's No. 3-4-5 batters in order to preserve a 10-7 lead.

Hideki Matsui, who is expected to follow Suzuki to the major leagues next season, had one hit in five at-bats and is just 4-for-28 on the tour.

Japan's only series win against MLB All-Stars came in 1990. On Sunday, Japan will send Yomiuri Giants ace Koji Uehara to the mound against Montreal Expos righthander Bartolo Colon.
