Major League All-Stars lose in Japan

TOKYO, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Outfielder Hideki Matsui highlighted a five-run third inning with a two-run double Sunday as the Japan League All-Stars beat the Major League Baseball All-Stars, 8-4, at the Tokyo Dome.

The MLB All-Stars defeated the Yomiuri Giants, 8-1, on Saturday night.

The All-Star Series moves to the dome in Fukuoka on Monday. Chicago White Sox lefthander Mark Buerhle starts for the MLB All-Stars and Chunichi Dragons righthander Kenshin Kawakami pitches for Japan.

Matsui, who hit 50 home runs this year with Yomiuri and will play in the major leagues next year, went 1-for-4 for the second straight day.

With Japan leading, 2-0, Matsui lined a curveball from Florida's Brad Penny over the glove of New York Yankees first baseman Jason Giambi for his two-run double.

Makoto Imaoka, a second baseman with the Hanshin Tigers, had led off the inning with a home run.

Alex Cabrera, the first baseman for the Seibu Lions, was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. His two-out single gave the Japan team a 6-0 advantage in the fourth inning.

The Japanese team sent 11 men to the plate and had seven hits in the third inning, knocking Penny out of the game after 2 2/3 innings. He gave up five runs and eight hits. Japan's starter Koji Uehara, who went 17-5 this past season, allowed five hits, walked none and struck out eight over six innings.

Known for his herky-jerky motion, Uehara struck out San Francisco's Barry Bonds three times in as many plate appearances and Giambi twice.

Bonds had not struck out three times in a game since Aug. 8, 2001 against the Cincinnati Reds.

After hitting two homers apiece on Saturday, Bonds and Giambi went a combined 1-for-6. Giambi had a second-inning single.

Minnesota's Torii Hunter hit a home run in the fifth inning for the MLB All-Stars. He added a double and scored in a three-run ninth.

Trailing 8-1 going into the ninth, the MLB All-Stars scored three runs off reliever Yasuhiro Oyamada. Florida's Derrek Lee and Oakland's Eric Chavez hit singles, and Hunter doubled before a pair of RBI groundouts by Minnesota's Jacque Jones and A.J. Pierzynski.
