Boston 7, Washington 2

WASHINGTON, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- Brian Rolston scored his fourth goal in three games and had a pair of assists Wednesday night as the Boston Bruins extended their unbeaten streak to eight games with a 7-2 victory over the Washington Capitals.

Rolston scored his first shorthanded goal of the season 1:58 into the second period to give Boston a 4-1 lead and knock Washington goaltender Craig Billington out of the game. Rolston led the NHL with nine shorthanded goals last season.

The center, who notched a career-high 62 points in 2001-02, has eight points in nine games this season. Rolston is helping to pick up the offensive slack while Sergei Samsonov recovers from a sprained wrist.

The Bruins also got offense from an unexpected source as P.J. Stock had his first career multi-point game with two assists. Known primarily as an enforcer, Stock had three assists last season and only once had as many as two in an entire month. He then lived up to his reputation in a third-period fight with Stephen Peat.

Stock assisted on goals by Rob Zamuner and Jozef Stumpel. P.J. Axelsson, defenseman Bryan Berard, Glen Murray and Joe Thornton also scored for Boston, which is 6

2-0 since an opening-night loss at Minnesota.

Tim Thomas made 33 saves as the Bruins were outshot, 35-29. Billington stopped only eight of 12 shots before being replaced by Sebastien Charpentier, who made 14 saves.

Billington is winless in four starts this season. The Capitals will miss starter Olaf Kolzig for at least the next three games as he recovers from a hand injury.

Jaromir Jagr assisted on both Washington goals. He leads the Capitals with 12 points.
