Georgia loses another wide receiver

ATHENS, Ga., Oct. 28 (UPI) -- Fifth-ranked Georgia suffered another blow at wide receiver when Damien Gary underwent surgery on his

left leg Sunday night that will sideline him indefinitely.

Gary, a junior from Athens, is suffering from acute compartment syndrome, a buildup of a pressure in his lower leg. He underwent surgery at St. Mary's Hospital and will require a second surgery at a later date, which could sideline him for the season.

"He's not going to be able to play for a while. He's going to be fine," Georgia Coach Mark Richt said. "It's going to take time to heal and we don't expect him back anytime soon."

Compartment syndrome is a painful condition that results when pressure within the nerves builds up to dangerous levels. Gary suffered the injury in Saturday's 52-24 win at Kentucky.

Gary is Georgia's second-leading receiver with 27 catches for 254 yards and four touchdowns. He also has been valuable on special teams, averaging 15.2 yards on 27 punt returns.

The Bulldogs (8-0) played last week without receiver Fred Gibson, who tore ligaments in his left thumb in a 48-17 win over Vanderbilt on Oct. 19. It is uncertain if Gibson will play in Saturday's game with No. 22 Florida in Jacksonville, Fla.

Georgia also played without running back Musa Smith and offensive tackle Jon Stinchcomb last week due to injuries.
