Angels rally to force Game 7
ANAHEIM, Calif., Oct. 27 (UPI) -- A two-run double by Troy Glaus in the eighth inning finished off a season-saving comeback Saturday night, gave the Anaheim Angels a 6-5 victory over the San Francisco Giants and forced a seventh and final game of the World Series.
The baseball season will come to an end Sunday night with the Angels trying to become the second team in as many years to win the final two games at home after falling behind in the series, three games to two.
With Barry Bonds adding to his historic World Series with a mammoth home run in the sixth inning, San Francisco built a 5-0 lead and appeared headed toward its first championship since 1954.
But a three-run homer in the seventh inning by Scott Spiezio off reliever Felix Rodriguez gave Anaheim a chance
The Angels then completed their comeback in the eighth with a Darin Erstad homer and the two-run double by Glaus that sent the Anaheim fans into a frenzy.
It was the seventh time in the playoffs that Anaheim has fallen behind and still won the game.
Anaheim's comeback at least temporarily spoiled a dream World Series for Bonds, who has reached base 19 times in 26 plate appearances. During those 26 trips to the plate, he has taken only 21 swings. But he has walked 12 times, the most ever in a World Series.
His seven intentional walks in his lone World Series to date, one of them coming Saturday night, are more than any other batter has ever had in a career. His home run Saturday night was his fourth in the series and the 14th for the Giants, breaking the 1956 record established by the New York Yankees for the most homers in a World Series.
Fighting Irish stay unbeaten
TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Oct. 27 (UPI) -- The Notre Dame Fighting Irish demonstrated Saturday they have the stuff to challenge for a national championship.
But they are not alone.
The Miami Hurricanes, Virginia Tech Hokies, Ohio State Buckeyes and Georgia Bulldogs all remained unbeaten Saturday, creating a potential nightmare scenario for the Bowl Championship Series and its goal of creating a national title game between two undisputed challengers.
And while Notre Dame, Miami, Virginia Tech, Ohio State and Georgia all won again, the Oklahoma Sooners protected their No. 1 ranking in the BCS by taking the day off.
Notre Dame had climbed to the No. 6 ranking in the coaches poll thanks to an outstanding defense and when the first BCS ratings came out last week, the Fighting Irish were a surprising No. 3.
Despite all that, they found themselves a 10-point underdog when they made their trip to Florida State Saturday to take on the 13th-ranked Seminoles.
Notre Dame proved it belonged among the big shots with a 34-24 victory that was more one-sided than the score indicated. The Irish took over the game in the third quarter, forcing turnovers on three consecutive plays late in the period.
The offense converted them into 17 points in a 2 1/2-minute span as Notre Dame pulled away from a 10-10 haltime tie to improve to 8-0 for the first time since 1993 -- the only other year the Fighting Irish had beaten Florida State.
"It is a very difficult thing to come into this place and win," Notre Dame Coach Tyrone Willingham said. "We played a great team with a great coach and we are very fortunate to walk out with a victory."
Notre Dame built a 38-10 lead before Florida State managed two late touchdowns. The Irish now will play Boston College, Navy and Rutgers and will be heavily favored to win all three.
That would set up a season-ending meeting with Southern California.
Virginia Tech and Miami, meanwhile, will meet at season's end to eliminate one of those teams from national championship contention. But Oklahoma, Georgia and Ohio State could all finish their seasons unbeaten, which would touch off a furor as to which two teams should be able to play for the national crown.
Big upset highlights Breeders' Cup
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., Oct. 27 (UPI) -- There was a little something for everyone in Saturday's 19th running of the Breeders' Cup.
A couple of favorites won, wrapping up year-end championships. There were some huge upsets, with big prices on the board. The Europeans had their ups and downs but walked off with one of the day's biggest prizes. And the home team arguably retained bragging rights.
Arlington management, hosting its first Breeders' Cup, got cool but dry day and 46,118 people showed up for racing's biggest day. A few rays of sunshine even poked through the clouds as the horses came on to the track for the final championship race, the $4 million Classic.
It was the Classic that provided the biggest shocker of the day. Volponi, a 4-year-old who has raced with limited success this year, exploded down the stretch to beat 3-year-old Medaglia d'Oro by 6 1/2 lengths, paying $89 to win. It was the biggest upset in the Classic since Arcangues shipped in from France to California to win the 1993 running at odds of 133-1.
Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner War Emblem had hoped to wrap up Horse of the Year honors with a victory in the Classic. He fought for the lead with E Dubai until the field hit the stretch turn, then both faded from contention with War Emblem finishing eighth. He now heads for a breeding career in Japan.
That outcome left year-end honors up in the air. A beneficiary could be Azeri, the impressive winner of the first race on Saturday's championship card, the $2 million Distaff.
Predators pick up first win
NASHVILLE, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- Andreas Johansson scored two goals and assisted on another Saturday night as the Nashville Predators defeated the Detroit Red Wings, 3-1, for their first win of the season.
Signed by Nashville as a free agent in early September, Johansson has excelled, collecting five goals and three assists in eight games. Drafted by the New York Islanders in 1991, the 29-year-old Swede also played for Pittsburgh, Ottawa, Tampa Bay, Calgary and the New York Rangers before landing with the Predators.
Entering the game with a 0-4-1-2 record, Nashville took a 1-0 lead on Johansson's first tally at 3:39 of the first period.
Other NHL results: Boston 4, Atlanta 3; Chicago 3, Carolina 3; New York Rangers 4, Toronto 3; Philadelphia 6, New York Islanders 2; Montreal 5, Ottawa 3; Pittsburgh 5, Buffalo 2; Washington 1, Florida 1; New Jersey 5, Tampa Bay 1; Edmonton 4, Anaheim 3; St. Louis 4, Calgary 3 in overtime; Dallas 3, Vancouver 1; Minnesota 6, Phoenix 1.
Huston fires 61 to share lead
PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga., Oct. 27 (UPI) -- John Huston fired an 11-under-par 61 Saturday and moved into a tie with Tim Herron atop a crowded leaderboard after the third round of the Buick Challenge.
On an ideal day for scoring at Callaway Garden Resort, Huston came within one shot of tying Steve Lowery's five-year-old record. The 41-year-old Florida native matched the best round of his career, which he carded in the second round of the 1996 Memorial.
Huston is looking for his seventh career victory and first since the 2000 Tampa Bay Classic. His best finish this year was a tie for third in the Bay Hill Invitational, but he already is well over $1 million in earnings for the fourth time in the last five years.
Herron carded a 7-under 65 and was one of 19 golfers with three rounds in the 60s. He began the day tied with Australia's Craig Parry and ended it tied with Huston.
Parry shot a 66 and was tied for third at 19-under 197 with 2001 PGA Championship winner David Toms, who fired a 63.
Emmitt Smith goes after rushing record
IRVING, Texas, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- The National Football League spotlight will fall on Texas Stadium Sunday, where Dallas Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith will need 93 yards to eclipse Walter Payton and become pro football's all-time leading rusher.
Smith and the Cowboys (3-4) host the Seattle Seahawks (1-5), who rank 30th in the league against the run.
If Smith is unable to pass Payton's total of 16,726 yards on Sunday, he likely he will break the record on the road. Dallas plays at Detroit and Indianapolis around a bye week before hosting Jacksonville on Nov. 24.
The 33-year-old Smith has averaged 63.9 yards in Dallas' first seven games this season but enjoyed his best game of the year last week, rushing for 82 yards on 22 carries in a 9-6 loss at Arizona.
Smith has helped the Cowboys win three Super Bowls, rushed for 1,000 yards an NFL-record 11 times and set the record for rushing touchdowns with 149.
The Cowboys could give Smith more than 22 carries Sunday with Chad Hutchinson making his first start at quarterback after spending the previous four seasons playing baseball in the St. Louis Cardinals' organization.
First place in the NFC West will be on the line Sunday when the Arizona Cardinals (4-2) visit the San Francisco 49ers (4-2). There have been few big games for Arizona, which has just one winning season (9-7 in 1998) since moving to the desert in 1988. Their 4-2 start matches the best since the move.
With plenty of offensive weapons in quarterback Jeff Garcia, the backfield of Garrison Hearst and Kevan Barlow and star receiver Terrell Owens, the Niners are the clear favorite. However, Arizona has been surprisingly good on defense, allowing just 15.5 points per game.
The Pittsburgh Steelers (3-3) and Baltimore Ravens (3-3) are just .500 teams but will battle for first place in the NFC North in Baltimore.
The Steelers will be without running back Jerome Bettis, who has a sprained left MCL. But Bettis did not play due to a groin injury when the Steelers posted a 26-21 win in Baltimore last Dec. 16 and was again out of the lineup when Pittsburgh rolled to a 27-10 victory over the Ravens in the divisional playoffs.
Perhaps the NFL's best rivalry resumes Sunday when the Oakland Raiders (4-2) visit the Kansas City Chiefs (3-4). The AFC West rivals are even after 86 games at 42-42-2, but the Raiders have won the last five meetings, including the past three at Arrowhead Stadium by winning field goals in the final seconds of regulation or in overtime.
This showdown has all the makings of a shootout. The Chiefs lead the NFL in scoring at 34.1 points per game and rank second in yardage at 390.4 yards per game. The Raiders top the league in yardage (433.8) and rank second in scoring (32.6).
