EDMONTON, Alberta, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Ivan Huml snapped a tie with his first career goal and Tim Thomas made 31 saves in his NHL debut Saturday night to lead the Boston Bruins to a 4-3 triumph over the Edmonton Oilers.
With the game tied, 3-3, late in the third period, Huml fired a slap shot from just above the left faceoff circle that got past a surprised Tommy Salo for the 21-year-old's first goal in six NHL games.
The Bruins improved to 3
1-0 in their last four contests, all on the road. Boston completes its season-opening six-game road trip Monday in Toronto before playing its home opener Thursday against Ottawa.
Selected in the fourth round of the 2000 draft, Huml -- who also set up Jozef Stumpel's first goal of the season -- nearly went from hero to goat after taking a penalty with 71 seconds remaining in the third.
But the Bruins were able to fend off Edmonton's power play and make a winner of Thomas, who was recalled Thursday from Providence of the American Hockey League after John Grahame went down with a shoulder injury. A 1994 draft pick of Quebec, the 28-year-old Thomas signed with Boston as a free agent after spending last season in Finland.
Defenseman Nick Boynton and Brian Rolston also scored for the Bruins, who were without injured left wing Sergei Samsonov (wrist).
