Arizona St. 45, Oregon 42

EUGENE, Ore., Oct. 19 (UPI) -- Andrew Walter connected on 31 of 53 attempts for a school-record 536 yards and four touchdowns Saturday as the Arizona State Sun Devils rallied from an early 21-point deficit to hand the Oregon Ducks their first loss of the season, 45-42.

Oregon (6-1, 2-1 Pac-10) also saw its 11-game winning streak come to an end. The Ducks were trying to reach 7-0 for the first time since 1933.

Arizona State (6-2, 3-0) trailed, 21-0, after 21 minutes and faced a 35-17 deficit with 4 1/2 minutes to play in the third quarter. But Walter threw touchdown strikes of three yards to Mike Pincard and 67 yards to Shaun McDonald late in the period and 58 yards to Justin Taplin to give Arizona State a 39-35 lead early in the fourth.

After Mike Barth made a 44-yard field goal to extend the Sun Devils' advantage to 42-35, Justin Fife tossed a 12-yard pass to Samie Parker to tie the score with 6:57 to play.

Barth put the Sun Devils ahead, 45-42, with a 29-yard field goal with 1:58 remaining, and on the Ducks' next play from scrimmage, Fife was hit as he attempted a pass and Brett Hudson intercepted the throw. Arizona State ran out the clock.

McDonald had 12 receptions for 204 yards and one touchdown for Arizona State, which snapped a four-game losing streak to Oregon.

Fife was 20 of 31 for 268 yards and three touchdowns and Onterrio Smith ran for 172 yards and three scores. Smith extended his school record for consecutive 100-yard rushing games to seven.

Arizona State gained 598 yards but rushed for only 31 on 32 attempts.
