NBA suspends two for DUI

NEW YORK, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- The NBA on Monday suspended Philadelphia 76ers forward Derrick Coleman and Cleveland Cavaliers center Zydrunas Ilgauskas for the first game of the regular season following separate charges of driving under the influence.

Coleman was pulled over for speeding and arrested this summer in a Detroit suburb for suspicion of drunk driving. The 12-year NBA veteran was faced with a similar charge in 1999, when he was with Charlotte, but was acquitted.

Ilgauskas, a 7-3 Lithuanian whose career has been slowed by foot injuries, was stopped in suburban Cleveland last month for erratic driving. He was arrested after failing field sobriety tests.

Both players pleased no contest to their charges.

Piniella decides to leave Mariners

SEATTLE, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Lou Piniella, who endured a trying season with the Seattle Mariners, has decided not to return to the team in 2003.

The Mariners said Piniella based his decision on personal and family reasons. A Tampa native, Piniella said the decision "had nothing to do with baseball."

Piniella, who guided the Mariners to a 93-69 mark in 2002, is under contract for next season, so if he decides to return to the dugout in 2003, the Mariners could demand compensation.

Piniella reportedly is a leading candidate for vacancies with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and New York Mets.

Several media outlets, including the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and New York Newsday, reported that Piniella has asked the Mariners permission to speak with the New York Mets, who fired Bobby Valentine earlier this month.

"The thing with me, basically, was the distance," Piniella told the Post-Intelligencer. "It got harder and harder, and that's the primary reason. There are family issues, and it just so happens there are a couple of jobs much closer to home. That's it."

Piniella, who lives in Tampa, Fla., apparently became disenchanted with Seattle. One story in a New Jersey newspaper quoted an unnamed Mets source saying that club would be willing to compensate the Mariners with money or players to get Piniella as manager.

Despite the injury, Fiedler came out for Miami's last possession after Jason Elam boomed a 55-yard field goal to give Denver a 22-21 lead with just 45 seconds remaining. After two incomplete passes, Fiedler faced a third down play with 29 seconds left and fired a 17-yard pass to rookie tight end Randy McMichael.

Fiedler was fortunate on his next pass, which was tipped by Broncos linebacker John Mobley into the hands of Dolphins wide receiver Dedric Ward for a 22-yard gain to the Denver 35 with 11 seconds left, setting up Mare's winning kick.

The win gave the Dolphins (5-1) a two-game lead in the AFC East over New England and Buffalo.

Ray Lucas is Miami's backup quarterback, and former Washington Redskin Sage Rosenfels is third string.

The Dolphins host Buffalo this Sunday before a bye week. At 5-1, Miami is tied with San Diego, Green Bay, New Orleans, and Tampa Bay for best overall record in the NFL.

Falcons linebacker on injured reserve

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga., Oct. 15 (UPI) -- The Atlanta Falcons placed rookie linebacker Will Overstreet on injured reserve Monday and signed linebacker Karon Riley from the practice squad to the 53-man roster.

Overstreet, 6-2, 259, was drafted by the Falcons in the third round out of Tennessee. He aggravated his left shoulder injury in the third quarter of the Giants game on Sunday.

Chiefs rookie Sims out for season

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Rookie defensive tackle Ryan Sims, the first-round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs and sixth overall selection, will miss the rest of the season with a dislocated left elbow.
