Mississippi St. 11, Troy St. 8

STARKVILLE, Miss., Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Mississippi State intercepted six passes Saturday and recorded its first win over a Division I-A team this season with an 11-8 victory over Troy State.

Fred Reid carried 18 times for 122 yards for the Bulldogs (2-4), whose only other win this season was over Division I-AA Jacksonville State.

The Bulldogs scored on a 31-yard field goal from Brent Smith in the first quarter and on a 15-yard pass from Kevin Fant to Reid in the third.

The Trojans (2-5) avoided their first shutout since 1983 on LeBarron Black's six-yard touchdown run with 57 seconds to play.

The Mississippi State defense ruled the day, holding Troy State to just 197 yards of total offense. The Bulldogs allowed 408 yards in a 34-10 loss last week at South Carolina.

Troy State's Hansell Bearden was seven of 25 for 61 yards with five interceptions. Wide receiver Jason Samples, who did not catch a pass, threw the other interception.

Fant completed 22 of 32 passes for 210 yards.

The Bulldogs' Terrell Grindle had two catches for 25 yards, marking his 20th consecutive game with a reception.
