Repent out of Breeders' Cup

LOUISVILLE, Ky., Oct. 10 (UPI) -- A leg injury has knocked Louisiana Derby winner Repent out of the Breeders' Cup Classic.

Trainer Ken McPeek disclosed Thursday that the 3-year-old son of Louis Quatorze suffered a mild tendon strain in his left foreleg. The injury was discovered in an examination after a morning workout at Churchill Downs.

"The tendon had looked a little suspicious and I didn't like the way it looked after he galloped this morning," McPeek said. "He was scheduled for a major work this weekend and I wanted my veterinarian to take a close look at it."

According to McPeek, the injury will keep Repent from training for some three months. The colt had been a contender for the Kentucky Derby before undergoing surgery in April to remove a bone chip from his left front ankle.

"I'm very optimistic he'll be fine," McPeek said. "But we won't be able to make the Classic."

Repent raced twice since undergoing surgery, finishing a strong second to Medaglia d'Oro in the Travers at Saratoga before coming in seventh in the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park.
