Capriati upset in Germany

FILDERSTADT, Germany, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Jennifer Capriati was stunned by fellow-American Alexandra Stevenson Wednesday in the second round of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix.

After receiving a first-round bye, Capriati fell to the qualifier, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-4, in her first tournament since losing in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open last month.

"I never have too many expectations coming into Filderstadt, and I wanted to change that this year," said Capriati, who has not won a title since capturing the Australian Open the third week of the season.

"Today's match was my first since the U.S. Open and I didn't play that badly. Alexandra came up with some big serves and great shots on the important points."

This was the second time in tournament history that the No. 1 seed had lost her opening match. In 1995, Conchita Martinez also lost to a qualifier, Petra Bergerow.

Stevenson evened her record against her countrywoman to 2-2. She beat Capriati in the second round at Sydney in January en route to the quarterfinals.

"This match was identical to our match in Sydney," said Stevenson, runner-up at Memphis in February. "I was serving for the match both times at 5-3 and got broken, but I came back and played well on her serve, because I know she's vulnerable there.

"I always go onto the court believing I can win every match. I'm quite tired having played five matches in the last six days, but I am glad I have a day off tomorrow before the quarterfinals."

In other second-round action, second seed Lindsay Davenport of the United States dispatched Israel's Anna Smashnova, 6-4, 6-3; and No. 8 Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia defeated Austrian wild card Barbara Schett, 7-5, 6-1.

The defending champion, Davenport is coming off a runner-up effort Sunday in Moscow. She has reached at least the semifinals in six events since returning from right knee surgery in July.

Smashnova has won a career-high three titles this season, but fell to 0-4 lifetime against Davenport.

The first round was completed Wednesday as Russian Elena Dementieva routed South African Amanda Coetzer, 6-3, 6-0; Myriam Casanova of Switzerland got past Lisa Raymond of the United States, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, in a battle of qualifiers; and Anne Kremer of Luxembourg eliminated Bulgaria's Magdalena Maleeva, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

Maleeva was fresh off winning her first event of the year in Moscow.
