HOUSTON, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- The first college football game at Reliant Stadium, the home of the NFL's Houston Texans, produced the first win of the season for Rice.
Kyle Herm passed for 137 yards and rushed for 102 as the Owls snapped a five-game losing streak with a 37-20 Western Athletic Conference victory over Louisiana Tech.
Herm completed four of eight passes, one of them being a 57-yard touchdown strike to Clint Hatfield that gave Rice (1-4, 1-2 WAC) the lead for good at 21-20 with 7:34 left in the third period.
After Brennan Landry kicked a 35-yard field goal, end Brandon Green returned an interception 13 yards to make it 30-20 1:13 into the final period.
Vincent Hawkins capped the scoring with an 18-yard run just over six minutes later.
Herm opened the scoring with a 15-yard scamper 4:29 into the contest, but Louisiana Tech (2-4, 1-1) grabbed a 20-14 halftime lead on Luke McCown's three-yard keeper seven seconds before intermission.
McCown completed 22 of 37 passes for 189 yards, but threw three interceptions and was sacked four times. Joe Smith paced the Bulldogs on the ground with 93 yards on 17 carries.
