SEATTLE, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Kyle Boller threw for five touchdowns and 266 yards Saturday as the California Golden Bears ended a 19-game losing streak against the 12th-ranked Washington Huskies, 34-27.
California (4-2, 1-1 Pac-10) defeated Washington for the first time since a 7-0 victory in 1976. The last three losses in the series had been especially frustrating for the Golden Bears, who blew double-digit leads in each contest.
Boller threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to Jonathan Makonnen -- his second touchdown reception -- early in the second quarter to give California the lead for good at 14-10. He added a 55-yard touchdown pass to Vincent Strang as the Golden Bears took a 21-16 lead into halftime.
Washington (3-2, 0-1) attempted to rally from a 34-18 deficit in the fourth quarter when quarterback Cody Pickett scored on a one-yard plunge and John Anderson booted a 37-yard field goal to slice the deficit to 34-27 with 1:45 remaining.
But the Huskies were unable to get the ball back as their 17-game home winning streak came to an end.
Pickett completed 35 of 59 passes for 399 yards but was intercepted twice.
