Drury to Flames in major trade

CALGARY, Alberta, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- The Calgary Flames late Tuesday landed center Chris Drury, one of the NHL's top clutch players, in a five-player trade with the Colorado Avalanche.

The Flames also received center Stephane Yelle, and sent defenseman Derek Morris and centers Dean McAmmond and Jeff Shantz to the Avalanche.

Drury, 26, is coming off a disappointing season in which he had 21 goals and 26 assists in 82 games. He added five goals and seven assists in 21 postseason games as Colorado reached the Western Conference finals before losing to eventual Stanley Cup champion Detroit.

"Chris Drury and winning are interwined," said Flames General Manager Craig Button. "He is a very good player in all areas of the game and we are very excited about him and the elements he brings to the Calgary Flames."

With a penchant for scoring big goals in the postseason, Drury, 26, was a member of the Avalanche's Stanley Cup-winning team in 2000 when he scored 11 goals.

His disappointing 2001 season came after he collected 67 and 65 points in the previous two campaigns. In 314 career games, Drury has 85 goals and 137 assists.

In addition to his success on the ice, Drury was a member of the 1989 Little League World Series champions from Trumbull, Conn.
