SEATTLE, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Shaun Alexander set an NFL record with five touchdowns in the first half Sunday night and the Seattle Seahawks erupted for 28 points in a 1:47 span of the second quarter en route to a 48-23 rout of the Minnesota Vikings.
Held to one touchdown in his first three games after reaching the end zone 14 times last season, Alexander busted out against the Vikings, who endured a turbulent week leading up to the game thanks to star wide receiver Randy Moss.
Alexander ran through and around the Vikings, scoring on runs of two and 20 yards in the first quarter. He had an 80-yard touchdown reception with 2:53 left in the first half before scoring on runs of three and nine yards just nine seconds apart.
Alexander carried 11 times for 111 yards in the first half. He gained just 28 yards after halftime and finished with three catches for 92 yards.
Strong safety Reggie Tongue returned an interception 46 yards for a score with 66 seconds left in the first half, giving Seattle (1-3) a 45-10 lead.
Seattle scored 21 of the points in its outburst as the direct result of turnovers. Nick Davis and D'Wayne Bates lost fumbles on consecutive kickoffs and Tongue brought back the interception of Daunte Culpepper for his score.
The oft-troubled Moss provided a distraction off the field earlier this week for the Vikings. He was charged with two misdemeanors after allegedly bumping a female traffic officer with his car in Minnesapolis.
Moss, who reportedly was fined $50,000 for the incident by the Vikings, made little impact on the field. He had six catches for 50 yards and dropped two passes in the end zone on consecutive plays in the third quarter.
Moe Williams scored on a pair of short runs and Culpepper passed for a score for the Vikings (0-4), who have lost their first four games for the first time since 1967.
