JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Fred Taylor ran for 142 yards and a score and Stacey Mack had three touchdown runs Sunday as the Jacksonville Jaguars handed the New York Jets their third straight lopsided defeat, 28-3.

A season that began with Super Bowl expectations has come back to earth for the Jets (1-3), who had another inept game on both sides of the ball and lost quarterback Vinny Testaverde and receiver Wayne Chrebet to first-half injuries.

What angered Jets Coach Herman Edwards the most was four turnovers.

"That's been our deal. Until we get that right, it's going to be tough for us to win," Edwards said. "We're our worst enemy. Of all the enemies we play, the Jets are killing the Jets."

The Jets have allowed 133 points in their first four games and Taylor became the latest player to have a big day against them.

"I can't say it turned out like I visualized it would, except I visualized that we would win," Taylor said. "The coaches stuck with the running game and we were able to break off a few long runs."

Taylor, who missed 14 contests last year with a groin injury, has rushed for 339 yards in his first three games and was at full speed Sunday. On the Jaguars' first offensive play, Mark Brunell and Taylor hooked up on a 72-yard pass to the one-yard line. Mack went into the end zone on the next play.

Mack had a one-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter, capping a seven-play, 52-yard drive that included a 25-yard run by Taylor. The Jaguars finished with 223 yards on the ground.

"We pounded the ball. We ran the ball in the tough territory," Jaguars Coach Tom Coughlin said. "There's nothing fancy about it. It's just slam it up in there and get some bodies in front of the ball and let's go."

Brunell completed 10 of 15 passes for 173 yards.

Testaverde left the game in the first quarter with a right shoulder injury after he was sacked by defensive tackle Marcus Stroud. Chad Pennington, who has played sparingly in recent years as Testaverde's backup, completed 21 of 34 passes for 281 yards with one interception.

Both Edwards and Pennington tried to defuse any talk of a quarterback controversy.

"It's about the Jets. It's not about Chad Pennington," Pennington said. "Vinny and I will come out firing every day in practice and come out in games and get this ball rolling in the right direction."

Testaverde failed to complete any of his four passes before departing.

Chrebet suffered a bruised right leg after catching a pass that went for 24 yards in the second quarter. The reception led to the Jets' only score, a 46-yard field goal by John Hall.

Taylor had a 23-yard run in the third quarter, leading to an eight-yard touchdown run by Mack. The former University of Florida star ended any chance of a Jets comeback late in the third quarter when he went around left end for a 22-yard run to make it 28-3.

The Jaguars (2-1) showed no signs of rust after a bye week and have scored 86 points in their first three games.

"They're a talented team. I'm just very glad we were able to get a win," wide receiver Jimmy Smith said. "I don't consider them a bad team. What are you going to say, that every team we beat is a bad team? We've got to get credit at some point."

The Jets, meanwhile, wilted in the hot Florida sun for the second straight week. They lost at Miami, 30-3, last week after dropping their home opener to New England, 44-7.

Sunday's performance is certain to increase the heat on Jets offensive coordinator Paul Hackett, who came under fire last season.

New York's Curtis Martin gained 44 yards on eight carries. Trying to become the second player in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards in each of his first eight seasons, Martin has 98 yards all season.

"I don't know what the answer is. I know we're playing horrible," Martin said. "Right now, we're playing like kids and not an NFL-caliber team. We're all trying to figure it out."

Laveraneus Coles of the Jets caught eight passes for 97 yards.
