USC 22, Oregon St. 0

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Carson Palmer threw two touchdown passes to freshman Mike Williams and 22nd-ranked USC shut down Oregon State's normally high-powered offense Saturday night in a 22-0 victory over the 24th-ranked Beavers.

It was the Pac-10 Conference opener for both teams.

Ryan Killeen kicked field goals of 43, 42 and 32 yards for the Trojans (3-1, 1-0 Pac-10), who posted their 19th straight home win over the Beavers since their last loss in 1960. Killeen took over as the primary kicker in place of David Davis, who struggled in his first three games.

Taking advantage of a favorable early schedule, Oregon State (4-1, 0-1) scored 190 points in its first four games and was seeking it first 5-0 start since 1939. But the Beavers could get nothing going against USC, suffering their first shutout loss since a 23-0 setback to the Trojans in 1997.

Killeen kicked his first field goal on the second play of the second quarter. Derek Anderson was sacked and fumbled on the Beavers' next possession, leading to another field goal by Killeen.

Palmer completed an 11-yard pass to Williams with 10 seconds left in the second quarter, giving the Trojans a 13-0 halftime lead. Palmer completed 23 of 41 passes for 231 yards with one interception.

Williams caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Palmer early in the third quarter and Killeen kicked his final field goal early in the final quarter.

Anderson threw 15 touchdown passes in his first four games, but was eight of 30 for 80 yards. Tailback Steven Jackson, who ran for 227 yards last week against Fresno State, was held to 67 yards on 15 carries.
