NEW YORK, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- Mike Mussina pitched a two-hitter and Jason Giambi went 4-for-4 with his 39th and 40th homers Tuesday night as the New York Yankees stopped the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, 6-0.
Mussina (17-10) was brilliant, posting a season-high 12 strikeouts and walking only two. It was the righthander's first win since spinning a three-hit shutout at Boston on Aug. 28.
The Devil Rays did not advance a runner past second base. Their best scoring chance came in the fifth inning, when Ben Grieve walked and Toby Hall singled to open the frame. Mussina struck out Steve Cox, Andy Sheets and Felix Escalona to get out of trouble.
Mussina extended his record to 3-0 with a 1.86 ERA in four starts against the Devil Rays this season.
Giambi got New York's offense going in the first with a two-run homer off Travis Harper (5-9). He hit another two-run shot off Harper in the third before adding singles in the fifth and seventh.
Giambi was one of six consecutive Yankees to reach safely in the third. Bernie Williams doubled for his 200th hit of the season as part of that string and Raul Mondesi had a two-run double to cap the outburst.
Harper was removed after the third after allowing six runs, five hits, two walks and a hit batsman. Delvin James pitched well in a mop-up role, allowing four hits and a walk in five scoreless innings.
Alfonso Soriano went 0-for-5 and remained stuck on 39 homers. Soriano is trying to become the fourth player in baseball history to post 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in the same season, joining Jose Canseco, Barry Bonds and Alex Rodriguez.
