SEATTLE, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Hank Blalock hit an RBI single and an error by pitcher Kazuhiro Sasaki allowed two more runs to score in the top of the 10th inning Thursday night as the Texas Rangers beat the Seattle Mariners, 12-7.
The teams tied an American League record for most consecutive extra-inning contests against the same opponent. Seattle won each of the first three games, and no team had lost four straight extra-inning contests.
Carl Everett led off the 10th with a double off Shigetoshi Hasegawa (7-2), but injured his left quadriceps pulling up to second base. Pinch- runner Jason Hart advanced on a sacrifice by Todd Hollandsworth and scored the go-ahead run when Blalock bounced a single off Sasaki.
After Ruben Rivera and Michael Young walked to load the bases, Mike Lamb hit a potential double--play grounder to Sasaki, who threw well wide of catcher Ben Davis, allowing Blalock and Rivera to
scamper home, making it 10-7.
Alex Rodriguez was intentionally walked and Ivan Rodriguez greeted Doug Creek with a two-run double down the left-field line. Alex Rodriguez was thrown out at the plate to end the five-run outburst.
Jay Powell (3-2) pitched the ninth to earn the victory. Rafael Palmeiro and Alex Rodriguez tied the major league record by homering in the same
game for the 15th time this season as the Rangers ended a six-game losing streak.
Palmeiro had a grand slam, his 42nd homer of the season, off starter Jamie Moyer in the third inning, and Rodriguez added a three-run shot one inning later to stake rookie Ben Kozlowski to a 7-2 lead. It was Rodriguez's major league-leading 56th home run.
Kozlowski, who was making his major league debut, got out of frequent jams, walking eight and allowing three runs and six hits in five innings.
Reliever Todd Van Poppel was not as fortunate, surrendering a three-run homer to Bret Boone in the sixth that got Seattle to within 7-6. One inning later, the Mariners tied it when Jeff Cirillo scored on a wild pitch by Rudy Seanez.
