CHICAGO, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Mark Buehrle became the first Chicago White Sox lefthander to reach 18 victories in 17 years Tuesday night and Magglio Ordonez established a new career high for home runs in a 6-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals.
In his third attempt to reach 18 victories, Buehrle (18-11) allowed one run and six hits in seven innings and became the first White Sox lefthander to reach 18 wins since Britt Burns in 1985.
Buehrle fell behind 1-0 when he surrendered a home run to Mike Sweeney in the top of the third inning.
But the White Sox took a 2-1 lead after five innings and extended their lead to 4-1 when Frank Thomas and Ordonez connected for back-to-back homers.
Ordonez's homer was his 33rd, establishing a career high for the slugger. Ordonez had 32 in 2000 when Chicago won the American League Central.
Royals rookie starter Miguel Asencio (3-7) pitched well, but took the loss, allowing two runs and five hits in five innings.
