BUCHAREST, Romania, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Unseeded David Ferrer of Spain closed a nearly perfect week Sunday by capturing the Romanian Open.
Ferrer rolled to a 6-3, 6-2 victory over fifth seed Jose Acasuso of Argentina to become the fifth Spaniard to win the claycourt event since 1996. He lost just one set this week.
"It was the best week of my life," said Ferrer, who earned $48,850. "I'm happy with my first ATP tournament victory."
The 20-year-old Spaniard had not played a single ATP match before this year. In his first tournament, he reached the final at Umag two months ago.
Acasuso, 19, was hoping to win his second title of the year. He was lucky to reach his third career final after saving three match points in his semifinal upset of top-seeded Andrei Pavel of Romania on Saturday.
"I'm sorry for not playing at my highest level, but I felt very tired after the winning my semifinal," Acasuso said.
