Texas Tech 42, Mississippi 28

LUBBOCK, Texas, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Kliff Kingsbury threw for 270 yards and a pair of touchdowns Saturday as the Texas Tech Red Raiders built a big lead and then held on for a 42-28 victory over Eli Manning and Mississippi in a matchup of marquee quarterbacks.

Manning completed 34 of 57 passes for 374 yards and three touchdowns, but he was forced to pass all afternoon since Mississippi (2-1) was behind the entire game.

Manning also had a costly interception that defensive end Adell Duckett, who was making his first career start, returned 23 yards for a score in the second quarter to give Texas Tech a 21-7 lead.

Ole Miss punter Cody Ridgeway mishandled the snap on the Rebels' next possession and Texas Tech (2-1) took over just 11 yards from the goal line. Kingsbury scored on a two-yard plunge for a 28-7 halftime lead.

Manning threw a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including a seven-yard strike to Trey Fryfogle to cut the deficit to 35-28 with 8:43 remaining. Kingsbury responded by engineering a 12-play, 84-yard drive that he capped with a three-yard toss to Nehemiah Glover for the final margin.
