Dokic, Seles lose in Brazil

SALVADOR, Brazil, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- It was a day of surprises at the Brasil Open Friday as last year's finalists -- Jelena Dokic and Monica Seles -- were ousted from the event.

Dokic, the top seed from Yugoslavia, fell to third seed Anastasia Myskina of Russia, 6-2, 6-4, in a semifinal match while No. 2 Seles lost to No. 8 Eleni Daniilidou of Greece, 6-1, 7-5.

In men's quarterfinal action, Gustavo Kuerten moved closer to his first title of the year and the first of his career on home soil. The sixth-seeded Brazilian beat Argentine qualifier Gaston Etlis, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.

A former world No. 1, Kuerten has captured 16 career ATP titles, but none in his native Brazil. The 26-year-old from Florianopolis has struggled to regain his form after undergoing hip surgery in February.

In his first semifinal of the season, Kuerten will take on Paraguay's Ramon Delgado, who upended No. 8 Andre Sa of Brazil, 6-4, 7-5.

Two more men's seeds were bounced as American Cecil Mamiit ousted No. 5 Agustin Calleri of Argentina, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, and Argentina's Guillermo Coria downed No. 7 Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia, 6-2, 6-4.

Myskina beat Dokic for only the second time in six meetings. She lost to her in the final at Birmingham in July. The 21-year-old Russian, whose only title came in 1999 at Palermo, also was runner-up at Eastbourne.

Daniilidou captured her first WTA Tour crown this year at 's-Hertogenbosch. The 19-year-old from Greece gained revenge over Seles for last week's 6-2, 6-3 loss at the U.S. Open.
