Last of charges against Iverson dropped

PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- The remaining two misdemeanor charges against Philadelphia 76ers guard Allen Iverson were dropped by District Attorney Lynne Abraham Thursday because his accusers did not want to pursue the case.

Iverson, 27, was arrested on 14 charges in connection with a July 3 incident in which he and his uncle, 39-year-old Gregory Iverson, allegedly burst into his cousin's apartment with a handgun and threatened two men.

Four of the charges were felonies - two counts of criminal trespass, a weapons charge and conspiracy - but all were thrown out on July 29 after Iverson's accusers, Charles Jones and Hakim Carey, gave conflicting testimony.

The only charges left standing by Municipal Court Judge James M. DeLeon were two counts of terroristic threats and those were dismissed on Thursday.

"We are gratified by today's decision to drop all remaining charges against Allen Iverson," the 76ers said in a statement. "From the beginning, we urged our fans, the press and the public not to immediately react, but to allow the matter to be processed by the judicial system."

Jones, 21, and Carey, 17, alleged that Iverson came to a Philadelphia apartment once shared by Jones and Iverson's cousin, Shaun Bowman, showed them a handgun in his waistband and threatened them, demanding to know the whereabouts of his wife, according to police reports.

However, under questioning by Iverson's attorney Richard Sprague in the preliminary hearing, Carey said that he did not see Iverson brandish a gun when he showed up in the apartment with his uncle.

Carey also said that Jones told him to back up Jones' story that Iverson had a gun.

Jones took the stand later in the day and denied that he had told Carey what to say to police.
