Boston 6, Tampa Bay 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Trot Nixon delivered a tie-breaking, two-run single in a four-run ninth inning rally Thursday as the Boston Red Sox won for the 10th time in as many games at Tropicana Field this season, downing the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, 6-3.

It marks the first time in 48 years a team has gone unbeaten in 10 or more games in another team's ballpark since the Cleveland Indians went 11-0 against the Red Sox at Fenway Park in 1954.

Boston is 14-2 overall against the Devil Rays in 2002.

The latest win capped a four-game sweep. The Devil Rays aided Boston's ninth-inning rally with a fielding mishap, two walks and a wild pitch.

The Red Sox had just four hits through eight innings and trailed, 3-2. But Esteban Yan (6-8) walked Nomar Garciaparra to start the ninth and Manny Ramirez followed with a single to center.

Boston manager Grady Little opted not to bunt with lefthanded hitter Cliff Floyd at the plate, but Floyd hit a liner right at first baseman Steve Cox. Pinch-runner Rickey Henderson was able to slide back into first base and avoid the double play.

Yan moved both runners into scoring position with a wild pitch and walked Brian Daubach, who earlier had hit his 19th home run of the season, to load the bases.

The Red Sox received another gift from the Devil Rays when pinch-hitter Carlos Baerga hit a bloop to shallow left. Shortstop Chris Gomez appeared in position to make the catch, but dropped the ball.

Gomez recovered quickly and fired the ball toward home as Garciaparra was barely halfway down the line, but Cox inexplicably attempted to cut off the throw and the ball caromed off his glove, allowing Boston to tie the game.

Nixon followed with a two-run single to right-center as Baerga crossed over to third. Baerga scored the final run of the inning on a chopper up the middle by Rey Sanchez.

Tim Wakefield (10-5) improved to 6-1 lifetime against the Devil Rays, allowing one earned run and seven hits in eight innings.

Tampa Bay's Victor Zambrano (6-8) pitched seven innings and yielded two runs and four hits.
