Arizona 8; San Diego 2

PHOENIX, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- Curt Schilling pitched seven strong innings Tuesday night and Luis Gonzalez and Matt Williams each belted two-run homers to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to an 8-2 triumph over the San Diego Padres, maintaining their 5 1/2-game lead in the NL West.

Schilling (23-5), with a 23-2 intradivision record since being acquired by Arizona in July 2000, recorded his career-high 23rd victory. He allowed one run and three hits and posted his sixth straight win over the Padres.

The veteran righthander struck out 10 without a walk and improved to 11-2 in his last 15 starts and 30-6 since July 31, 2001.

Gonzalez hit his first homer since Aug. 23 in the fifth inning, and Williams added a blast two batters later to give the Diamondbacks a 6-1 lead. Williams, who also singled, has 10 hits and six RBI in his last 25 at-bats.

San Diego rookie Jake Peavy (5-7) was no match for the major leagues' victory leader, surrendering five runs and six hits in 4 1/3 innings. Peavy walked four and struck out six, falling to 1-6 on the road.
