SALT LAKE CITY, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Marty Johnson rushed for 229 yards and two touchdowns Saturday night before sitting out the fourth quarter with a sprained knee, leading Utah to a 40-13 victory over Indiana.
J.R. Peroulis added 118 yards on 16 carries as Utah (1-1) amassed 386 yards on the ground against an Indiana team that limited Division I-AA William & Mary to minus-32 rushing yards in a season-opening victory.
Johnson's performance was fourth-best in school history and it would have been even better had a 54-yard dash not been negated by a penalty. He ran for 111 yards in a 17-point second quarter, scoring on a two-yard run to put the Utes ahead for good, 13-6.
Lance Rice hit Paris Jackson from five yards for the first of his two touchdown passes. He also connectd with Josh Lyman for a 17-yard score early in the third quarter and was 15 of 28 for 104 yards.
Indiana (1-1) struggled in coach Gerry DiNardo's first road game, committing four turnovers and yielding nearly 500 yards in total offense.
Tommy Jones threw a 53-yard touchdown pass to Glenn Johnson on a flea-flicker late in the first quarter to give the Hoosiers a 6-3 lead. Otherwise, Jones was three for 12 for nine yards before giving way to Gibran Hamdan, who went 17 of 34 for 212 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions.
