Seattle 16, Kansas City 9

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Sept. 8 (UPI) -- John Olerud hit a three-run homer and Ben Davis slugged a grand slam Sunday as the Seattle Mariners tied an American League record with eight runs in the 11th inning and pulled away for a 16-9 triumph over the Kansas City Royals.

Seattle seemed poised for its fifth win in six games after scoring twice in the top of the ninth to take an 8-5 lead. But closer Kazuhiro Sasaki, who entered in the eighth, surrendered three runs in the ninth, including a two-run homer by Brent Mayne.

After Doug Creek (3-2) escaped a jam in the bottom of the 10th, Seattle broke open the game with a huge 11th inning against Kansas City relievers Blake Stein (0-4) and Kris Wilson.

Stein allowed Olerud's three-run tiebreaking homer and Wilson surrendered Davis' third career grand slam and second this season.

Seattle tied the AL record for runs in the 11th inning.

The win enabled the Mariners to remain four games behind Anaheim in the AL wild card race.
