PISCATAWAY, N.J., Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Brett Gordon threw three touchdown passes Saturday night, including a key six-yarder to Phil DiGiacomo late in the fourth quarter, as Villanova pulled away for a 37-19 victory over Rutgers.
Gordon completed 24 of 39 passes for 321 yards with an interception. After Rutgers climbed within five points on quarterback Ryan Cubit's two-yard run with 90 seconds left in the third quarter, Gordon guided the Wildcats on a 13-play, 80-yard drive.
He capped it with a short toss to DiGiacomo, extending Division I-AA Villanova's lead to 30-19.
Terry Butler, who rushed for 121 yards on 21 carries, capped the scoring with a 41-yard dash with 89 seconds to play.
Brian White was Gordon's favorite target, hauling in 12 passes for 165 yards. His 45-yard reception just over five minutes into the game gave the Wildcats a 7-0 lead.
Cubit hit tight end L.J. Smith for a pair of first-half touchdowns, but Rutgers never led and lost for the 18th time in its last 21 games. Cubit was 17 of 38 for 184 yards but was sacked five times and threw an interception.
