Star Maryland RB out 4-8 weeks

COLLEGE PARK, Md., Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Maryland junior running back Bruce Perry will miss more than the season opener against Notre Dame in the Kickoff Classic.

Perry, the Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Year last season, will miss four to eight weeks with a third degree tear of his left groin, the school announced Thursday.

The injury took place during warmups before Tuesday's scrimmage at Byrd Stadium. Surgery will not be required.

"Bruce's injury is very unfortunate for this team," Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen said. "The good news is that he did not tear the tendon off the bone and it looks like he will be able to come back at some point this year. If there is some silver lining, I think that is it."

Perry rushed for 1,242 yards last season, his first year as a starter. The Terrapins finished ninth in the nation in with an average of 156.2 all-purpose yards per game.

"Bruce is determined to rehab and get back on the field as soon as possible," Friedgen said.

Maryland was one of the surprise teams in college football last season, unseating Florida State as ACC champion and earning a berth in the Orange Bowl where it lost to Florida.
