San Diego 6, NY Mets 2

NEW YORK, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- Brian Lawrence scattered seven hits over seven innings and Ron Gant and Bubba Trammell hit two-run homers Wednesday night to lead the San Diego Padres to a 6-2 victory over the New York Mets.

New York has lost the first two games of the three-game series and have dropped seven straight home games for the first time since July 4-9, 1982. The Mets have been outscored in those contests, 47-19.

Lawrence (11-6) allowed two runs -- one earned -- with a walk and four strikeouts. Four relievers followed, including Trevor Hoffman, who got Marco Scutaro to ground into a double play on his first pitch to end the game.

Hoffman recorded his second save in as many nights and needed a combined three pitches to do it. He recorded his 30th save in 32 chances, giving him eighth straight seasons of 30 or more.

Al Leiter (10-9) labored through seven innings on a steamy night, allowing five runs and five hits.

The Padres scored four runs in their first at bat on Tuesday and broke out on top again on Wednesday on Gant's two-run homer in the first.
